Prayer Resources for the Millennium Celebrations

Collect for St Alphege's Day

Merciful God,
who raised up your servant Alphege
to be a pastor of your people,
and gave him grace to suffer for justice and true religion:
grant that we who celebrate his martyrdom
may know the power of the risen Christ in our hearts
and share his peace in lives offered to your service;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Millennium Prayer

Lord, you strengthened the heart of your servant, Alphege, to offer up his life as a faithful shepherd for his sheep,
and caused his death to be a means of reconciliation among divided peoples.
Grant that we who prepare to celebrate the millennium of his death may proclaim his example to a modern generation and follow it in our own lives,
through Jesus Christ Our Lord
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God now and for ever. AMEN.

 St Alphege’s Prayer

O Good Shepherd, O Incomparable Shepherd, look with compassion
on the Children of Thy Church, which I, dying, commend to Thee.

Prayer of thanks for St Alphege (1)

Almighty God
We gratefully remember your servant
Alphege:
 for his scholarship and gift for teaching,
for his leadership, energy, sense of order,
 and for his concern for the common good;
We thank you for the discipline of his religious life
which gave him nourishment and structure
in all he undertook;
Help us now in our day to emulate his qualities:
May we be students of our faith
and attentive to devotion,
valuing of Church life
and treasuring our heritage,
courageous in our Christian living
and sacrificial practitioners of justice and mercy,
healing and peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Prayer of thanks for St Alphege (2)

Eternal Father, we give you humble and heartfelt thanks for our patron saint, Saint Alphege.
We thank you for his life and his example to us all. We thank you for the churches dedicated to him. We join with our brothers and sisters in Christ as we celebrate his millennium this year. We thank you for his ministry and his ultimate accolade of sainthood, following his final appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury. Long may we all continue to follow in his footsteps and uphold his memory for the remainder of our earthly lives, in Jesu's holy name. AMEN
